Time Sensitive Night Work: Hydrovac Trench at Wind Farm Near Calhan, Colorado

SCOPE OF WORK

Next to a substation set in the middle of the wind farm near Calhan, Kinetic was tasked with trenching around an electrical vault box so that it could be removed. The work was done at night after the sun went down so that the Contractor could power down and lock out/tag out the substation prior to hydro excavating.

Challenges

The primary challenge faced on this project was scheduling. This particular job allowed minimal time for planning, requiring the work to be completed at night. Due to CDOT hour restrictions, all of Kinetic's typical Operators were booked through the week and wouldn't have enough “hours” required to complete the work and fall within compliance regulations to stay legal, and safe.

In order to get it done, the Kinetic Team pulled together, and the Branch Manager and Supervisor were able to complete the work throughout the night. This is a great example that all levels of the Kinetic Team are willing to do what it takes to accommodate our Partners. Kinetic takes tremendous pride in our ability to be nimble, and “make it happen”!

OUTCOME

Despite being at night, the work was completed efficiently and on time with no obstacles to speak of. The client was very happy with the quality of work and how quickly it was completed. Mortenson Construction continues to be an instrumental Partner to the success of Kinetic Energy Services.
