Private Utility Locates and Hydrovac

Private Utility Locates and Hydrovac in Greeley, CO at the Wastewater Treatment Plant

Kinetic locating utility map

SCOPE OF WORK

The scope on this project was to locate all private and public utilities using Electromagnetic (EM) Pipe Locator, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Potholing (Hydrovac) services. Garney Construction contacted Kinetic Industry to locate prior to Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) a new utility and excavating for a new building structure. All findings were to be painted, flagged, and sketched. The client is to use findings to safely dig/drill and design underground utility routes.

Challenges

This Wastewater Treatment Facility was created in the early 1900’s. Completing this project was a difficult task because of the age and complexity of the underground utility infrastructure. The biggest obstacles were locating the water, sewer and supply lines. These lines were non-metallic material and had no access to send a Electromagnetic (EM) signal to locate.

OUTCOME

After walking the site with the client and facility manager we were able to confirm all known utilities were marked. Electric, Communication, Gas, and Irrigation lines were found using an Electromagnetic (EM) Pipe Locator.

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was successful in confirming the depth and placement of the water and supply lines. The sanitary sewer line was then found by pushing a traceable rodder through an existing cleanout and sending a (EM) signal through to locate.

Kinetic Industry was able to utilize non-destructive testing methods to help eliminate extra time on site spent by the Hydrovac team while searching for these utilities.
